Faith and Pop Culture

From the Christianity Today Study Series comes Faith and Pop Culture, asking the question, “Can we find Jesus in popular entertainment?” This is an eight-week study course perfect for your small group or Sunday school class. It starts with a group discussion of your favorite movies and then starts tackling the issues. Chapter two deals with literature and again has a discussion question asking the group members to share their favorite books and why they enjoy them. From there we move on to “Finding God in Sports” which I am completely unable to relate to…lol so I just skipped that part

The next two areas discussed are Television and “Cover Your Eyes” which I feel go hand in hand.

This book does a stellar job of gently approaching topics that can easily become controversial in Christian circles. If the group leader approaches this the right way he/she will be able to maintain a peaceful discussion but should also be careful to keep the group focused, as these types of discussions can quickly turn into arguments about personal conviction and what is right vs. what is wrong.

It’s a good idea to know what is going on in the entertainment world around us since most people in our culture look to it as the norm. We must learn to be the salt and light to those around us and this book is a great tool for churches and independent study.

Ruby's Slippers by Leanna Ellis

As a lifelong Wizard of Oz fan I swear this book was written for me! Leanna Ellis takes us on a somewhat familiar journey to the Emerald City with characters Dottie and her little dog Otto. There are so many little things hidden in the book that when I discovered another one I let out an audible "oh!" and giggled. This is truly a story to remember and one that I'll be keeping on my bookshelf for years to come. I didn't want the story to end.

I guarantee you'll enjoy this one. If you don't, well then maybe you'll need to take a trip over the rainbow....

A Claim of Her Own

New from Stephanie Grace Whitson is A Claim of Her Own.  Follow the dreams of Mattie as she runs from her past to the town of Deadwood, South Dakota to meet up with her brother and his gold mine. Will Mattie learn to trust the people she meets? Will her gold mine strike it rich before her past can catch up to her?

This is a very good, well written novel. I enjoyed learning a little about the history of the old west and even got to meet Calamity Jane!

New from Bethany House.
