When Twilight Breaks, by Sarah Sundin, is the first book I've read by this author. This story whisks the reader back to 1838 in pre-WWII Germany. Tensions are rising with Hitler making decisions that threaten Jews and their friends. Evelyn Brand is an American journalist living in Germany and trying to write the news as she sees it, without being edited to appease the nationals. As a woman, she has to try harder and put herself more at risk to get the truth. She meets Peter Lang, a man she thinks is a sympathizer with the Germans, and immediately writes him off as another player. Tensions rise and Evelyn finds herself needing to flee. Not knowing who they can trust, Evelyn and Peter try to escape Germany with just the clothes on their backs. In the process they find love in each other. This story captivated me. I thought it was interesting to note much of what happened in pre-war Germany can be seen in the USA today. Freedom isn't what it is supposed to be. This book was hard to read (emotionally) because, while fiction, much of the backstory is truth. Such an incredible book. I will be seeking more from this author.
