The Healing of Natalie Curtis, by Jane Kirkpatrick, is a fictional account of a true story. Based in the early 1900's, Natalie is nursing a broken heart and discovers an untold injustice being done to the Native American community. On a trip west with her brother, George, she meets people from various tribes and learns of the codes forbidding them to maintain their customs, specifically music and song. Natalie takes it on herself to fight for the Indians, to restore to them what was being stolen in an effort to make them "white".
Jane Kirkpatrick has had a long list of unknown female history-changers, I don't know where she finds these ladies, but she gives a story to their voices and brings them to life in a way only she can. I love learning alongside her. This book is beautifully written and is not one to rush through. It took me several weeks to get through it. I ached with Natalie and cheered her as she met every goal. She truly was a remarkable young woman.
This release from Revell is one not to be missed.
